What is ‘Chukua Usukani’ Initiative?

By Jude Thaddeus.

It is that season again. A season that has now been branded as, ‘the silly season’. A season to throw reason to the back banner. And engage the emotions gear in making decisions.

…. It is, the election season.

A season when Citizens supposedly excersise their Constitutional right of electing a regime, and leaders, who will steer the Country in the desired path.

But, will they do that?

Chukua Usukani is a Kiswahili phrase. Chukua meaning ‘take’, and Usukani meaning ‘wheel’. Take the wheel, which translates to ‘take control’ or ‘take charge’. Be in charge!

Chukua Usukani is therefore a civic engagement excersise /initiative that seeks to engage the Kenyan citizens on matters 9th August 2022 Presidential Elections. Positioning them to take charge of the process, and the outcome. In this case, the outcome being electing leaders who are fit for office. From President, to Governor, Senator, Woman representative, Member of Parliament, to member of county assembly — While at the same time, ensuring that the environment is neither intoxicated with ethnic animosities, nor hate.

Chukua Usukani thus seeks to reverse the silliness of the season by engaging the populace on how to remain sober in making one of the most important decisions as citizens.

Engaging them to be active during this season. Maintain sorberness. And make the right choices.

Kenya, remains a Country that has so much potential for greatness in the global space. And in order to achieve this greatness, putting the right leaders into office, is the bare minimum.

Kenya, on the 9th of August, must strive to have leaders who will, in the most practical of ways, sort out some of the challenges bedeviling the Country. Challenges such as unemployment especially amongst its youth, high cost of living, corruption, political and economic exclusion of vulnerable groups, among others. These are challenges that require not only practical solutions, but also solutions that are well explained and understood.

Chukua Usukani Initiative, in the last one and a half Month, has held a series of discussions on topical issues related to the August polls. From topics touching on human rights, social justice, employment, healthcare, to devolution among others.

And as the election nears, this initiative will further seek to engage youth within their communities in taking charge of deciding their destiny at the ballot. While at the same time, maintaining sobriety in their actions before, during, and after elections.

Finally, this initiative remains open in its engagements and collaborations with like minded individuals and organizations to build a better Kenya for posterity.

We hope and strive for a free, fair, credible and peaceful elections this 9th of August 2022.

#ChukuaUsukani, as we face the future!
